Don Bosco Technical Institute began in 1996 as a private institution founded by the Congregation of Salesians of Don Bosco, located about one kilometre before Odumase town in Sunyani West, Bono Region. Its purpose from the start was twofold: to equip young people with quality technical education, and to instil the Catholic values of forming good Christians and honest citizens. In 2010, the Institute was absorbed into Ghana Education Service’s public stream, becoming a government-assisted technical school while retaining its Catholic Salesian identity and management.

The Institute’s education is rooted in the Preventive System — the educational pedagogy of Reason, Religion, and Loving-Kindness developed by St. John Bosco himself and handed down through generations of Salesian educators. It is an approach proven to deliver high academic and practical standards, creative problem-solving, and sound moral judgement alongside lasting positive behavioural change.

DBTI’s growth has been organic and department-led. The Agricultural Department — the “mother of all departments” — served as the Institute’s foundation, producing vegetables for the school and local market while training students in organic farming through its Green House. The Building Construction Department, among the first at the school, has built much of DBTI’s own campus. Electrical Installation and Basic Solar Technology began in 2013 to meet rising demand for electricians. Welding and Fabrication continues to enjoy strong local and international job placement. Computer Hardware Technology started in 2006. Newer, fast-growing departments include Fashion/Design, Catering and Hospitality, Mechanical, Automotive, and Electronics Engineering.

DBTI was a beneficiary of the Ghana–Austria TVET VACE project, which rehabilitated and equipped the Institute’s Computer lab, Electrical and Electronics labs, basic Mechanical workshop, Welding and Fabrication workshop, Automotive workshop, and Catering and Hospitality Management block — the modern facilities students train in today.

Over more than 35 years, DBTI Odumase has built a reputation not just as “a technical school,” but as the place where skills, character, and faith come together — a reputation reflected in recent recognition including 2nd Runner-Up for Best TVET School in Ghana at the 2026 Ghana TVET Excellence Awards, a 3rd-place national ranking in CTVET Certificate II examinations, and a scholarship partnership with WUSC’s EMPLOY project training young women in Electrical/Solar, Welding-Fabrication, and Automotive Engineering. Through its participation in the VIS Ghana SEE Project, supported by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), DBTI now embraces the next chapter of its story: a relaunched institutional website, strengthened ICT capacity, and structured digital communication.
